Folklife Festival

Northwest Folklife is a Seattle tradition that spans more than five decades. The 53rd iteration of the yearly event takes place May 24th to 27th at the Seattle Center. (And streaming online!) For those new around here, the festival celebrates the arts, cultures, and traditions of a global Pacific Northwest. It’s community-powered and free to attend—though donations keep this Seattle staple going.

Each year, the fest sets a specific cultural focus. In 2022, coming out of the pandemic, the theme was Metamorphosis. This year, it’s Meraki, a Greek word that means passion, joy, and the actualization of desire. Very fitting, considering the lockdown inspired many of us to seek out self-realization.

Expect a big festival, with performers on 20+ stages and hundreds of food and craft vendors showcasing local ingenuity. This year, enjoy “Threads of the People,” a new take on a fashion show, “Kuleana Corridor,” which highlights those working in food justice, and “The Maker’s Space,” where numerous hands-on demonstrations will happen. And see the 15-inch quilt blocks, which will make up the “Community Quilt” to honor the art of quilting.

Punk Rock Flea Market Holiday Show

On December 8-10 2023, the PRFM returns to Nii Modo at THIRD and UNION in the space formerly known as Bartell Drugs. Mark your calendars NOW for the sickest holiday shopping EVER. Three days of weirdness and wonder, loud music, strong drinks, and the PERFECT gifts for all the AWESOME people in your life!

Each day will feature a different mix of stuff for sale. Expect to see clothes, music, crafts, art, food, sneakers, skateboards, bondage gear, tattoos, imported knickknacks, electronics, taxidermy, prosthetic limbs, soap, crystals, bike parts, hardware, graffiti supplies, snake oil, droids… AND THAT'S JUST THE START!

The PRFM remains an ALL AGES event. Bring the kids, bring grandma, bring the whole damn crew. And we are PROUD to say that since 2006 it costs just ONE DOLLAR to take a deep dive into the bowels of pop culture ephemera while supporting local independent business.

As always, the PRFM supports our friends the Low Income Housing Institute, aka. LIHI, with a donation from our proceeds. LIHI is a non-profit organization that provides homes for homeless and low-income people all around the Puget Sound, and is currently leading the effort to build tiny self –contained houses for homeless people and families around our region. More info about them at www.lihi.org.

The Punk Rock Flea Market is supported in part by awards from 4Culture, City of Seattle and ArtsFund WA.

We’re WORKING HARD to keep the Pacific NW accessible, affordable, and weird. Help us stick it to the man by being part of our local out-of-the-mainstream business culture! HELL YES!
